Raising the Bar for Tennessee Wine
Tennessee’s wine industry is evolving quickly. Across the state, growers, winemakers, universities and industry leaders are investing in better vineyards, stronger education and more rigorous standards. Tennessee Quality Assured is how that progress shows up in your glass.
The Tennessee Quality Assurance Program, or QAP, was created in 2023 by the Tennessee Wine and Grape Board and is supported by the Tennessee Farm Winegrowers Alliance. The voluntary certification gives wineries a way to prove quality through independent testing and national recognition.
To qualify, each wine must pass laboratory analysis measuring factors like pH, acidity, alcohol and residual sugar to confirm the wine is stable and well made. From there, the wine must earn a medal or score at least 85 points in approved national or international competitions.
The program continued to expand in 2025, adding respected judging platforms like Wine Enthusiast Ratings & Reviews, the Texas International Wine Competition, the West Coast Wine Competition, East Meets West and the Great American International Wine Competition alongside established events like the San Francisco International, the New York International, the Finger Lakes International and the American Wine Society Wine Competition. Tennessee wineries can also receive reimbursement support for competition entry and laboratory fees, helping more bottles reach expert judges across the country.
The process is straightforward, but meaningful. Scientific testing confirms the wine is technically sound. Competition results show it can compete beyond Tennessee. For visitors, that shows up as something you can taste. Year after year, more Tennessee wines, from dry reds and crisp whites to fruit wines, ciders and meads, are returning from national competitions with medals and recognition. Together, those standards help guests identify wines that represent the best of what Tennessee wineries are producing today.

Investing in the people, not just the grapes
A wine industry is only as strong as the hands working in it. That is why Tennessee wineries are partnering with state colleges to bring more skilled people into the vineyards, the cellars and the tasting rooms.
The Peter Howard Wine and Ag Tourism Scholarship, launched in 2024 through the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Herbert College of Agriculture, places students into paid internships at Tennessee wineries, vineyards and agritourism operations. Each award is worth $3,000 to $5,000 per semester. In its first year, the program awarded $45,000 and placed 10 interns across the state, with more wineries signing on.
Tennessee is also home to the state’s first registered winery apprenticeship program, built in partnership with Dyersburg State Community College, the Tennessee Farm Winegrowers Alliance and a West Tennessee winery. Apprentices train as tasting room associates or vineyard foremen, logging thousands of hours of on-the-job learning alongside classroom instruction. The outcome is a pipeline of trained Tennesseans choosing wine as a career, not a side project.
That investment shows up the moment you walk into a tasting room. The host who knows the grape, points out the block on the hill and tells you why this vintage tastes the way it does, that confidence comes from somewhere. It comes from people the industry has chosen to grow.
A statewide effort, recognized at every level
The best way to understand Tennessee Quality Assured is to taste it. Walk through a tasting room. Talk to the people pouring. Pick up a bottle that carries the QAP designation. Plan a weekend along one of our regional trails. The next great Tennessee wine you have is waiting, raised by farmers, judged by experts and ready when you are.
